For Teachers, Parents and Caregivers

Rainworth State School believes that homework benefits all students. It is intended that teachers children and parents work together to enhance the learning of all our students.

Homework is intended to consolidate classroom learning / work and to inform parents as to what their child is learning.

  • Homework is to be given to all students at Rainworth State School in all year levels.
  • Homework task sheets will be given to all students on a weekly basis to be returned to the classroom teacher for discussion in class. (Homework will span a week-end (eg Monday to Monday). This is intended to provide flexibility and enable children time to successfully complete their homework as well as other individual and family commitments)
  • Homework is to be revision of work taught and practised during school time. Years 4-6 homework will also include research work for school projects / tasks
  • For those students who require additional support, the teacher will ensure that the homework meets their learning needs.
  • Challenging homework can be given to students who need and enjoy a challenge - but this is not expected to be of a compulsory nature.
  • Children are not expected to complete school “projects/tasks” for homework.
  • Small parts of projects/tasks can be set for homework, as long as they have been thoroughly scaffolded/taught by the teacher at school.
  • Years 1-3 take part in class talks. It is expected that the child will prepare as much of this as possible (at home with minimal parent intervention)
  • All homework sheets are to be signed off by parents / caregivers
  • Literacy and numeracy strategies will be available on the Parent Resources page of this site.
  • If students are unable to complete all or part of the homework task sheet, students should seek teacher clarification. If students are still unable to complete their task sheet, parents are requested to sign the sheet and return it to school on the appropriate day. The teacher will understand from the parent’s signature that the child has made an attempt to complete the homework. An explanation from the parent would be appreciated.
  • The Ed Qld recommended times are minimum times only. Small amounts of daily work/practice are educationally more beneficial than one long homework session, however if your child chooses to complete their homework in one sitting, they should partake in reading and/or spelling on other nights of the week.

If you prefer your child not undertake homework for any time frame, a signed note to the teacher stating your request is essential.

 Practical Hints for Parents

  • Make homework a pleasant experience by providing an attractive and quiet work area where there is a desk and adequate lighting.

  • Try to establish a predictable routine. Expect that homework should be done at the same time each day.

  • Encourage children to work reasonably quickly and efficiently. Do not let children work beyond the maximum time limits.

  • When helping, keep your explanations simple and practical. If possible, express approval and satisfaction.

  • If a task cannot be satisfactorily completed in the set time, stop your child working, sign the homework book and make contact with your child's teacher.

  • Monitor projects so that they are not left until the due date.
