The tuckshop menu has been designed according to the new Smart Choices - Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy that has been developed by the State Government.
What exactly does this mean for you and your children?
Smart Choices is all about supplying healthy food and drink choices to students in Queensland schools. School food and drink supply includes all situations where food and drink is supplied in the school environment – tuckshops, vending machines, school excursions, school camps, fundraising, classroom rewards, school events such as celebrations and sports days and food used in curriculum activities.
Reflecting the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents and The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, Smart Choices categories foods and drinks into three groups:
|
GREEN Foods |
AMBER |
RED |
|
GREEN foods and drinks are drawn from the basic five food groups and are low in saturated fat, sugar and/or salt and rich in nutrients. These foods should feature prominently in the school environment |
AMBER foods and drinks are mainly processed and have had some sugar, salt or fat added to them. These products should not dominate at the expense of healthier choices |
Limit the availability of RED foods and drinks to no more than two occasions per term |
|
All types of breads, preferably wholegrain Fruits – fresh, dried, canned Vegetables – fresh and frozen Reduced-fat dairy products including flavoured milks Lean meat, fish and poultry and alternatives Eggs and nuts Reduced-fat pies Cheese and yoghurts Popcorn Sushi Salads Water |
Full-fat dairy foods Savoury commercial products Processed meats Some snack food bars Some savoury biscuits Some cakes, muffins, sweet biscuits Some ice-creams, milk-based ice confections and dairy desserts Fruit juices (100%) Breakfast cereals – refined with added sugars |
Soft drinks, Energy drinks, Flavoured mineral water Confectionery Deep fried foods Crisps, chips and similar products Sweet pastries - Croissants, Doughnut, Slices, Cakes Chocolate coated and premium ice-creams Large serves of cakes and muffins |
The above information has been taken from the Governments Smart Choices policy and can be viewed at the following website - here.
The Rainworth State School Tuckshop Menu has been developed to meet the above guidelines. It has a new look with the Green and Amber foods clearly separated so that you can see where the foods that the children are ordering fit into the categories. Most of the food manufacturers are going to a great deal of trouble to meet the guidelines so that we will continue to use their product. To date it has been a little bit of trial and error where taste is concerned but they seem to be on the right track.
New items will appear on the tuckshop menu next term
Rosie attends the Tuckshop Trade Expos every year to make sure we have the best food with the least preservatives possible. There is always a considerable amount of fresh home made food available. Feedback is very welcome on any of these products.
Homemade Soup will be offered for the next few months. Please make sure the children collect it from the tuckshop.
Beef Burgers are back on the menu to give the chicken burgers a rest. A delicious bread roll is filled with a flame grilled burger, lettuce and tomato sauce, beetroot and should fill the hungriest of tummies.
Hot Apple Pies are available as a warm alternative for afternoon tea. These are a delicious pie with light pastry and they are 97% fat free.
Sushi and Vietnamese rice wraps have proven to be very popular and will continue to be offered on a Wednesday. Please order by Monday 11am to ensure you don’t miss out.
We hope you and your children enjoy their tuckshop menu and remember, feedback is very welcome on these products.
